Back then, tuition at an elite school (like Stanford) was $20,490*, which many of us weren’t even aware of, but we assumed our attention to savings would get us to where we needed when it was time for our kids to go to college. We werent worrying about how to pay for college then, but maybe we should have. Today, tuition at schools like Stanford, and many other private schools, range from the high $40,000s to the high $60,000s. And tuition at state schools has also increased as significantly. With these costs, families are even discussing should parents have to pay for college? Figuring out how to pay for college is not easy. Don’t comfort yourself by avoiding the inevitable, especially by saying â€Å"We’ll worry about it after he gets in.† Understand why these 5 ideas, that parents think will help them pay for college, won’t. What will help is to start educating yourself on financial aid and college data BEFORE you and your child even put together a list of possible schools. #1 Were not saving so well qualify for more financial aid. This strategy assumes that colleges are going to punish those that save money and reward those that dont. The thinking is that since families dont have any money set aside for college, the colleges will have to increase their financial aid awards. It doesnt really work that way. See, the federal financial aid formula that calculates the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is not based on money families set aside but mostly on their actual current earnings. So all that money a family spends on bigger houses or fancier cars instead of saving is expected to go towards paying college. And just because families need the money to make their current house and car payments is not going reduce their EXPECTED Family Contribution. If families cant meet their EFC, colleges are just going to provide them with information on student loans, not extra money to make sure they wont have to reduce their current spending. #2 My son is ranked 2nd in his class and has amazing test scores, hell get a scholarship. Not if hes applying to colleges that other students with the same qualifications are applying to. And there are a lot more people with the same qualifications than most parents realize. There are over 25,000 public high schools in the United States, each with their own valedictorian. Over 125,000 high school students will be ranked in the top 5 of their class. Furthermore, approximately 75,000 of college bound seniors scored a 1400 (out of 1600) on the SAT, which is the 96th percentile. There are over 110,000 students with equivalent ACT scores. Yet, the total number of freshmen in the top 20 national universities is around 40,000. The reality is that if your child gets into one of the most elite colleges, they wont be rewarded for their academic qualifications. After all, theyre the same as everyone else the college admitted. At Harvard, 80 of the admitted freshmen had 700s or better on the SAT Math and Critical Reading Sections. Those that didnt were probably athletes or legacies. If youre hoping for a scholarship from the college to pay the tuition, you need to look at schools where the students academic qualifications distinguish him from the majority of other students at the school. #3 Our student is going to declare to be independent so shell qualify for more financial aid. Students arent independent simply because their parents dont claim them on their income tax forms. In fact, there isnt anything the parents can actually do to make a student independent. They cant make them turn 24 any sooner. They cant make them marry someone-legally anyway. They cant make them join the military. And the other conditions that would allow a student to be considered independent are probably situations parents wouldnt wish on their children at age 18: Have children that receive more than half their support from the student (do you really want grandkids that badly?) Have been in foster care or a ward of the court at some time since age 13. If parents dont want to pay for college, that is their choice. But they shouldnt believe that they can get the college to cover their EFC by not saving for college or having their student declared independent #4 My daughter is the star of her high school team and is going to get a full-ride athletic scholarship. As good as your daughter is at soccer, odds are that she wont get an athletic scholarship, much less a full-ride. This is simply a matter of numbers. Over a third of all colleges do not offer any athletic scholarships. Furthermore, colleges that do offer scholarships do not offer full scholarships for most sports. There are only six sports required to offer full scholarships (football, mens and womens basketball, womens volleyball, gymnastics, and tennis) and only at the D1 level. Thats only approximately one-third of all colleges. All remaining sports are equivalency sports meaning one scholarship can be divided among multiple players. This happens because the number of scholarships allowed is always less, sometimes dramatically so, then the average teams roster. And just because a school is allowed to offer 12 scholarships, doesnt mean they will fund them all. Colleges actually offer much more academic scholarships than athletic scholarships. For most students, placing athletics before academics in hope of getting a scholarship is a risky strategy. #5 If you get in, well find a way to pay for it. Its only natural for parents to want to reward their childrens hard work. If all their high school accomplishments result in acceptance at one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, its hard for parents to deny them the opportunity to attend. But the reality is that its a bad idea for parents to borrow $200,000 or more or withdraw money from their retirement. No college can guarantee that its diploma will make up the difference in cost if the student had graduated from a less expensive school. If they could, they would. Parents need to discuss how much money is available for college BEFORE students start applying to colleges. That way, students realize it will take more than simply being accepted for them to attend college.

Ralph Ellisons Invisible Man And O. J. Made In America

Race and Opportunity play a grand role connecting the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, and the documentary O.J.: Made in America. Both stories are set within the pit of corruption held throughout the nineties, and display obvious connections between the narratives. To begin with I am going to discuss the history behind pop music from mid 1950’s to the 1970’s. Britain as a country was also in financial trouble, the economy was in bad shape. This was a grey time, and young British people/ British ‘kids’ had no dreams, and they could only copy the images which they saw on television or in the media from the life of kids in America. These young Americans would be driving their own cars, and wearing the latest fashionable clothes. The British youth would watch and hear the latest ‘Rock ‘N Roll’ music sounds from the States with artists such as Elvis Presley. During the 1950’s British children had no a separate youth culture from their parents. The transition between child and adult was nothing huge or spectacular. The way that young people dressed was almost the same as their parents. They were not a separate group with their own values and customs. British youth culture was small, and was totally dominated by American trends and styles. The British music industry in the 1950’s relied heavily on American music which led to British copies, of American-style music. The music industry was controlled from London but was out of touch with the needs and wants of the youth of Britain. However, even in this atmosphere, a uniquely ‘British’ musical trend emerged in late 1956-57; this was called ‘Skiffle’, (a kind of simple folk music played by a small group (friends), mainly with rhythmic accompaniment, usually a washboard to a singing guitarist). This simple style was easy for teenagers to play, just one guitar, and someone who could vaguely keep a rhythm on a washboard. Skiffle was made famous by Glasgow-born Lonnie Donegan. Lonnie was hugely popular and, an inspiration to the musical youth of Britain. There are many famous musicians and groups e.g. Eric Clapton (is an English blues-rock guitarist, sing er, songwriter and composer. He is one of the most successful musicians of the 20th centuryy) who all say that Lonnie Donegan was a big influence on them. Music was different between the South of London compared to the North. In the cities outside of London, especially Liverpool, but also Birmingham, Manchester, and Newcastle had a musical revolution. In Liverpool, a ‘music culture’ very different and separate from London was happening. In the North, the kids loved Rhythm ‘N’ Blues, and Rock ‘N Roll, not the easy listening music that they had in the south. By the early 1960’s northern cities had a large and highly competitive band scene emerging in which hundreds of ‘local’ bands tried to find and perform the latest imported songs from America. Indeed it is often said that American Blues music, the music of black people, was originally from America but was found not popular but when it came over to Britain it succeeded to be popular and that’s when Americans accepted it and then began to like it. In Liverpool, the music they played was a mix of the American music with a touch of the ‘Mersey’ and ‘Liverpool’ individualism. The concept of a ‘Mersey beat’ was born. By the 1960’s there were so many great groups in this Mersey scene such as ‘The Beatles’ and everyone young in Britain decided they were number one. The Beatles went to America, and once The Beatles had ‘cracked’ the American market, their success just kept flowing. Suddenly Britain, (mainly London), was ‘swinging’, in the ‘swinging 60’s’. Britain became the centre of the music and fashion world. There was a genuine energy, creativity and optimism which was totally the opposite of the mood of a few years before. The economy that influenced the music industry; in the early 1960’s, the economy of Britain took off. Britain became a rich country; everybody had jobs and money, including the young people. In particular the youth of Britain had started to get more money, and acquire spending power and became independent. This meant that they bought more clothes and records. Young people became big business, and record companies and fashion companies wanted young people to buy their products and so advertising the message of youth. Britain succeeded largely when the US president John F. Kennedy was assassinated and it left America in a state of shock, without a sense of direction and vulnerable. The Americans looked to England for musical and artistic inspiration, and so Britain became dominant within the music industry. The impact of US films and music inspired a series of spectacular and distinctly British youth subcultures from the mid-50’s to the late-70’s. Many groups decided to drop out of British society. They decided to make their own small societies in Britain. Some wanted to change the whole country as well. In 1953 became the creation of ‘Teddy Boys/Girls’ this was the first youth group in Britain. They dressed with a Rockabilly’ style and with ‘quiffs’, influenced by Elvis Presley, accessories such as flick-knives, crepe sole shoes, and they were typically from working-class London. They were not so revolutionary but rather violent. The music of their interest was ‘The Beatles’, ‘The Who’, and ‘Jimmy Hendrix’. In 1963 became the ‘Mods’ a Jamaican-rude boy/Italian-cool style, and US soul. [Muriel] Saville-Troike (1989) makes a further sub-classification between downward and upward style-shifting to indicate shifts to a lower or higher level, respectively. In addition, Saville-Troike (1989: 67) introduces the notion of intra-sentential style-shifting, which is said to occur when the variety of language used changes within a sentence, for example, as when an informal greeting is followed by a formal address, or even more extreme when there is a shift in formality involving grammar and lexicon. Routledge, 2007) Style-Shifting and Audience Design Theory [Allan] Bells (1977, 1984) Audience Design Theory (AD) states that people engage in style-shifting normally in response to audience members rather than to shifts of attention paid to speech. In this way, intra-speaker [within speaker] variation is a response to interspeaker [between speakers] variation, chiefly as manifested in ones interlocutors (Bell 1984:158). In fact, intra-speaker variation derives from the variability that differentiates social groups (inter-speaker variation) and, therefore, its range of variation will never be greater than that of the latter. This theory is based on the socio psychological model developed by Howard Giles (speech accommodation theory: SAT; see Giles Powesland 1975, Giles Smith 1979, or Giles Coupland 1991) to explain the causes of styling, especially in the consideration of the effects of addressees as audience members in terms of accent convergence or divergence (see also Auer Hinskens 2005).The Audience Design Model provides a fuller acc ount of stylistic variation than the Attention to Speech one because (i) it goes beyond speech styles in the sociolinguistic interview by trying to be applicable to natural conversational interaction; (ii) it aims at explaining the interrelation of intra-speaker and inter-speaker variation and its quantitative patterning; and (iii) it introduces an element of speaker agency into stylistic variation, i.e. it includes responsive as well as initiative dimensions to account for the fact that (a) speakers respond to audience members in shaping their speech and (b) they sometimes engage in style shifts that do not correspond with the sociolinguistic characteristics of the present audience . . .. In the movie Easy Rider Jack Nicholoson’s character George Hanson comes in contact with two long-haired social misfits Wyatt and Billy. Wyatt and Billy are different from George and are accustomed to an alternative lifestyle. This alternative lifestyle is appealing to George and he decides to travel with his new friends as they journey to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Along the way the trio run in to trouble. They travel through a small American town and the local townspeople who do no like them because of their appearance. Later on, the three men are attacked by the townspeople and George is brutally beaten to death. This is very similar to the executions that took place in The Crucible. In The Crucible, many people were accused of being witches and worshipping the devil even though they were not. An example of this would be John Proctor. He was accused of devil worship because he was singled out by his peers who were looking for someone to blame. Much like George, John was an innocent man who died because an enraged group of people let there emotions get the best of them. John could sympathize with George because of the similarity of the injustice done to both of them. In the short story "Roman Fever," the characters Mrs. Ansley and Mrs. Slade are two wealthy widows that are reflecting on their lives together. We see that they are people of a high social standing. They talk about their pampered lifestyles and plan for their daughters futures. These woman would not understand the life of a "hippie" living in 1960’s America, nor would they approve. That made me realized what’s The best choice for me. And this is just happened to me a month ago before December enter the year. Since birth I have a childhood friend that became part of my life. Each and every day we are together. Those days are just passing by and our relationship as friends became more deeper and deeper that I came to the point I fall in love with him secretly. But instead of telling it into him, I decided to not mention my feelings anymore for our friendship has been gone through the years. And I don’t want to ruin that friendship. But fate never gives a consideration, into me. My parents decided to continue my high school at manila, together with my sister. And when my last day in our province came, I let him knew that I was leaving. That time I wanted to tell him the truth. I have the chance but I let it go. I never succeeded telling into him that I really love him. After that event I really hate fate for deciding what for my life. I do really hate it for I was such in a poor condition that time. But two years had passed. No communication for the last two years. And when I spent m y semestrial break in our province after two years, I really did see the things change. When I came back home I saw him. And flashback remains into my head. But instead of smiling into him, I pretend not to see anyone. until he said to me that he was fallen in love with me. But as hearing the soft words he had spoken I cant really imagined that all the old feelings of yesterday is now coming back faster. But of course, I remembered he was my friend. And I like him too. But what the heck? After some month I rejected him even though I loved him. And that he quits on asking. After some month December came a number texted me and ask who it was.
