Analysis of “1954” by Sharon Olds Essay

â€Å"1954† by Sharon Olds is a poem displaying the horrors of an instance of rape and murder of a young girl by a man named Burton Abbott in 1954. Olds uses a frantic and horrified tone highlighted by a careful choice of diction to express her messages that any ordinary-looking person can disguise evil and the current justice system has a hypocritical eye-for-an-eye mindset that only ends up destroying human life. The structure of â€Å"1954† is built on enjambment and broken sentences. This helps the reader understand fear the speaker feels, as if words are simply pouring out, developing the frantic and horrified tone of the poem. This fear builds as the speaker begins to make connections between the victim and herself. The author uses clear imagery in phrases like â€Å"†¦I feared the word eczema, like my acne and like the X in the paper which marked her body†¦Ã¢â‚¬ to help make these connections. The speaker relates the victim’s eczema with her own acne, and recognizes how an innocent, little girl has been reduced to nothing but an X that marked where her lifeless body was left. Now that the speaker can relate to the victim in a clear way, she begins to realize how ordinary the murderer was. The author uses simple, ordinary diction to describe him. Phrases like â€Å"as if he were not someone specific,† â€Å"his face was dull and ordinary,† and â€Å"he looked almost humble† are examples of the author’s use of ordinary diction that make the killer seem normal. The speaker then says the killer went against â€Å"what I’d thought I could count on about evil.† This helps support the message that evil can be disguised in anyone because by making the murderer seem ordinary, the author forces the speaker and the reader to begin to question the people around them. A definite shift occurs in line 22 of the poem. The author shifts from using the word â€Å"fear† to the word â€Å"pity† when referring to the crime, and begins to use â€Å"fear† to describe how the speaker feels towards consequences the murderer, Burton Abbott must face. The speaker realizes that â€Å"the good people, the parents† were going to fry Mr. Abbott on the electric chair for his crime. The author deliberately used the word fry to express that the parents of the victim did not just believe that Abbott should receive capital punishment, but they wanted him to suffer; they wanted to watch him  writhe in pain for what he did to their daughter. As a result, the speaker begins to fear electricity, and her mother’s electric blanket. The author uses this and other carefully chosen phrases like â€Å"death to the person, death to the home planet† to demonstrate the hypocrisy that exists in the justice system’s eye-for-an-eye men tality when it comes to capital punishment. When someone commits a murder, they are sentenced to death, simply resulting in further loss of human life. People who see these crimes in the news not only fear the murderer; they fear the brutal punishment just as much, demonstrated by the speaker’s new fear of electricity. The author uses carefully chosen diction and tone to communicate two completely different messages to the reader. Both of these messages come together at the end of the poem to pose a single, lingering question to the reader: Who should we fear more? The murderer, or our own justice system?

Feng Shui Essay

Feng shui traces its origin to ancient China. Although it was often utilized by the ancient Chinese to predict the future, feng shui was more than that. Literally translated as â€Å"wind water,† it was fundamentally a part of their beliefs concerning nature – specifically the anchored on the principle that when man elects to live with nature, he and his environment both benefit by his actions. This is in contrast to what happens when he is living against nature where his activities destroy either himself, nature, or both. (Carroll, 2007) According to Feng shui man is greatly affected by his physical and emotional surroundings. In other words, a man who finds himself in the midst of a negative atmosphere like noise, ugliness, or death is debased, while he who surrounds himself with things associated with the positive such as beauty, music, kindness, and sweetness joins the ranks of the virtuous and the noble. (Carroll, 2007) The so-called experts in feng shui claim that they utilize their knowledge about the five elements of nature (wood, water, fire, metal and earth) and the two energies called chi and sha to sense â€Å"metaphysical energies† and predict the directions of their flow. This is what occurs when they arrange the furnishings inside a house, recommend the best directional position that a building should take, or where to locate it within a piece of land before construction work starts. For instance, these masters would position the beds in every room in certain ways, they would tell the homeowners where to locate the dining room or bathroom, where the appliances should be, what kind of paintings or framed pictures to hang and where, or even which direction the house should face – all of these after using their â€Å"sensors† to tell which way the good energy flows. The objective of the exercise, according to feng shui masters, is to make optimum use of the good energies and avoid the bad energies. For some people, however, feng shui is nothing but superstition. Improving Patient Flow in Emergency Departments Research Paper

Improving Patient Flow in Emergency Departments - Research Paper Example He added that the increased number of admissions and unscheduled patients has significant impacts on the entire emergency care delivery system. In the throughput phase, there were delays in the operating suites because it is mainly done in specific days of a week. He said that surgical operations are done on Mondays and Tuesdays rather than spreading out the operations throughout the week. It, therefore, means that surgeons and other clinical officers are very busy in some days and free in others. The administrator of Provicence Hospital added that the various problems faced experienced in the output phase include prolonged time of discharge or referral and incomplete treatments. He noted that the incomplete treatments is a common problem in ED because it leads to delayed discharges and referrals and can last for many weeks when patients are instructed to visit the ED again in specific dates (Hall, 2013). Bottlenecks and the metrics used to identify them as well as the challenges of the patient were also identified during the interview. Note that the term ‘bottlenecks’ is the part of the emergency care delivery systems that is obstructed to cause delays and waits. Metrics and the methods used to measure the efficiency of the system (Hall, 2013). Based on Mr. Johnson’s response, the bottlenecks in the emergency care delivery system can be divided into three groups. In the group for inputs, the major bottleneck is the delayed admission and registration of patients due to the fact that clinical care responsibilities are not separated from the paper and information flow. The metrics used to identify this issue involved the measurement of the time taken for patients to be registered. Do they wait for long on the benches? Based on his response, most of the patients admitted to the ED wait for around 40-45minutes before they are treated. In the group addressing the throughput, the main bottleneck identified is the creation of idle time

Hand and Wrist Positioning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Hand and Wrist Positioning - Essay Example The four-view wrist series includes semipronated and semisupinated (reverse) oblique views, Posteroanterior (PA) and PA in ulnar deviation and the three-view hand series includes the semipronated oblique views, PA and Lateral view (Kurtz, 1997). These are the three common positions of X-ray for both the wrist and hand (Kurtz, 1997). The techniques of (PA), Oblique and lateral projections are used to perform the radiography for routine examination of hand and wrist (Dr.Ahmad, 2008; Joseph, 2007) and the best view conventionally according to Dr.Ahmad (2008) is PA projection. The main difference between hand and wrist positioning for the three views are how the fingers are held. In the semipronated oblique view the fingers in hand X-ray are held â€Å"as flat as possible and slightly fanned out† but for wrist, the fingers â€Å"curled under into a loose fit to help press the wrist closer to the film if possible† (Kartz, 1997:1). In the lateral view for hand the positioning of fingers is like an okay sign so that on x-ray each finger is visible and for wrist finger’s position does not matter. In case of Scaphoid the positioning of fingers is similar to that of hand x-ray however â€Å"only one finger is extended so that the finger in question is the only one seen on all three pictures† (Kartz, 1997:1). Criminal Justice Organizations- Assignment 1 Essay

Criminal Justice Organizations- Assignment 1 - Essay Example As noted in chapter 1 of Stojkovic, Kalinich and Klofas’s book police departments are complex public entities. If the county sheriff’s department served me, this would be easier because it is cheaper. It is expensive to starting a police department because it requires a person to have the means to get special vehicles and equipment, garage space and a big office. Stojkovic, Kalinich and Klofas, (2014) assert that criminal justice administrators have to deal with so many obligations even when the laws are difficult to work with for the administrator. Even if the community is small, it becomes hard to provide full-time coverage when there are very few officers. One of the advantages of having a large department over the small department is that there are more officers in large departments since most get a higher pay than those in small departments. Well paid officers depict a motivated workforce who serve the community better and are more committed to their work (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2014). Another merit is that a large department has many officers from different communities; the officers are also from different ethnic backgrounds. Having many officers from different ethnicities makes it easier to curb criminal gangs in many areas since, criminals tends to listen to officers they can relate to through languages, cultures or races. Small departments have high rates of turnover, fewer promotions and new recruits tend to complain that it takes too much time before they learn new things in the

The Representation of the People Act 1983 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Representation of the People Act 1983 - Essay Example Prisoners are allowed to vote in Canada, Ukraine, South Africa, Iran and some other nations, whereas other nations like Russia, Finland, some states in the USA ban prisoners from voting . Approximately, 4.5 million prisoners around the world have been disenfranchised . In the US some states allow felons out on parole or probation to vote . In Richardson v Ramirez , the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a state’s right to ban felons from voting. In Sauvà © v Canada , the Supreme Court of Canada rejected the legislation forbidding federal prisoners from voting. In Hirst v United Kingdom , the European Court of Human Rights, applying the reasoning in the case of Sauvà © v Canada, held the ban on prisoners’ voting rights as invalid. The UK government argued that disenfranchisement prevented crime and punished offenders, serving to enhance the civic responsibility and respect for the rule of the law. It also argued that convicted prisoners due to having breached the social contract had surrendered the right to take part in the civil process for the period of their sentence. The notion of civil death or withdrawal of political, legal and civil rights has its origins in ancient Greek and Roman societies and was adopted by medieval Europe .

The Disabled and Society Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Disabled and Society - Essay Example Furthermore, people with disabilities are sometimes neglected by family members and friends and finally in instances where these people seek power, they are not given an ear and this demoralizes them. In order for someone to prove that they have a disability, they must be in a position to prove that they have that impairment. Secondly, they must show how it hinders them in performing day-to-day activities. Finally, the person must prove that this impairment brings lasting and lifelong effects on their capabilities to handle their daily routines. It is defined, under the act, that a long-term impairment is one which has at least lasted for 12 months. Furthermore, in case one has a long-term ill health disability, like HIV, they are supposed to prove using medical pieces of evidence. The perspective of the medical mode towards the disables is that the hardship undergone by disabled people is inborn and they should struggle to ensure that they improve in order to live in harmony with other people3. The problem with this model is that it tends to see disabled people as liabilities to others and people who in one way or the other cannot do much without assistance. An obese person is a person who body has accumulated too many fats. Medically, a person with a more than 30 BMI is obese and in extreme cases a BMI of 40. According to the court ruling, obesity is a disability to a certain degree4. It is important to understand that obesity is not a disability. This is because, some people, who are obese, are living a good life. They have been employed and are not undergoing any challenge as far as obesity is concerned. However, obesity becomes a disability when it has shortcomings that can hinder the person from doing certain things. Secondly, it becomes a disability when it facilitates the occurrence of other impairments like skeletal and respiratory issues. People suffering from obese related problems are considered to be disabled.

Leisure and tourism operations management Essay

Leisure and tourism operations management - Essay Example The Service Concept Service quality is the method to manage the business processes to ensure customer satisfaction at all levels. Hospitality sector was identified by the atrium concept designs, service and the hotel industry has seen many developments in past few years. In the hotel industry, the customer chooses to buy service depending on its quality (Panda, 2006). The Service Package (The mixture of goods and services that make up the service) The service provided by hotel is based on guests / customers. The service package includes providing online room / air ticket reservations and chuffer driven car to pick up guests from airport. The hotel provides facilities such as elevators , central heating , in room radio , bar , electric elevator, centralized computer, electric cash register, free in room movies, video conferencing features, swimming pools, separate swimming pool for children, golf ground, sports activities, gym, beauty parlors and in-house restaurants and shops. Servic e Processes According to Sampson service processes are where the customer provides most of the inputs to the production process (Sampson, 2000). Service is interaction of customer and producers. The service process in the hotel includes booking airline tickets and hotel rooms through internet and on reaching the city, the guests are picked up by the vehicle of the hotel. The customers can even make direct call to the hotel to book tickets and there are other means by which you can book rooms at the hotel. The complete information related to the hotel is provided through its website and local marketing means. The hotel is a leader in its business model due to the high class service. Since, Turkey is a popular tourist destination every year many visitors come to the hotel. Fitzgerald Typology (Volume/Varie ty) To design a service system the importance of variability should be determined (Kannan and Proenca, 2010) .The hotel has 200 rooms which includes standard rooms, suits and deluxe rooms and during the peak seasons from October to March the demand for rooms is very high. It provides many different type of entertaining and engaging activities to guests such as dance parties, music evenings etc) to enable convenient and enjoyable stay at the hotel. Visitors from different parts of world come to the place and the hotel staffs have to meet the variability in demands. Capability and Commodity Processes The hotel has the capability to accommodate more than 100 guests at one time but sometimes in peak season it becomes difficult to handle varieties of customers. The service is handled by the front desk employees. Schmenner Typology (1995) Schmenner typology identifies four different types of service processes which include service factory, service shops, mass service and professional serv ice. The hotel provides professional service where the staff immediately responds in professional manner to every call and provides the desired service. Though professional services it is easy to handle variability in customer call. Service Processes (Location and Mapping) Internet provides complete informat

Nutrition, Physical Activity and Weight Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Nutrition, Physical Activity and Weight - Essay Example From this study it is clear that  evidence based messages to promote healthy nutrition in adolescents should target food groups, snacks, meals, fast food and beverages. Teenagers should ensure that their diet contains a variety of foods such as grains, meat, poultry, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and nuts to accommodate their growth requirements of minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Daily 5 servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended. This paper highlights that energy dense-nutrient poor foods such as fried potato chips, biscuits and cakes lead to a lower intake of fruits and vegetables and are more likely to be associated with consumption of other energy dense-nutrient poor foods like colas. Energy drinks and soft drinks should be consumed in limited quantity because of their high caffeine and sugar content. Current research suggests that reducing consumption of sugar sweetened and carbonated drinks can help in obesity prevention. Instead, water in take should be increased. They should be taught to read the labels before consuming packaged and processed foods regarding calories, fat and sodium content of the product and choose accordingly and wisely. Also, difference in home cooked and processed food can be explained and reasons for ‘eating out’ analysed.  Adolescents should be explained about the benefits of staying physically active and how it can be achieved. Teenagers should be encouraged to take part in sports and other physical activities at school.

Hemingway’s The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber Essay Example for Free

Hemingway’s The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber Essay The three characters in Hemingway’s The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber form a triangle in which the relationships are not clear from the beginning. The plot of the short story is not very complicated: during a safari, the rich and handsome Francis Macomber proves to be a coward when he runs off scared while hunting the lion he had wounded.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In fact, the attribute of ‘coward’ is given to him, indirectly, by his wife Margot and by Wilson, the hunter who accompanies them on the expedition. The whole story thus revolves around the killing of the lion, an act which seems to be the ultimate proof of manhood, and, which constitutes therefore a great attraction to women. The setting and the context of the story- the safari in the wilderness of Africa- seem to determine also the plot: Hemingway chooses for his characters two Americans with a great wealth and social stand, who are supposed to be very civilized, and exposes in fact their instinctual behavior, which seems to have kept its wild nature. Francis Macomber and Robert Wilson ‘fight’, by proving their courage in the hunt, for the ‘female’ who will instinctually choose the stronger of the two. The fact that the behavior of wild animals and that of humans have a common pattern is emphasized by Hemingway careful notation of the lion’s ‘feelings’ while he is being hunted by the two men. Thus, a clear connection is established between men and the wild animals: â€Å"Macomber had not thought how the lion felt as he got out of the car. He only knew his hands were shaking and as he walked away from the car it was almost impossible for him to make his legs move.†(Hemingway, 8) Thus, after Macomber’s failure in the hunt of the lion, Margot kisses the ‘winner’, Wilson, and completely ignores her husband, and her behavior seems to be the exact pattern of the creatures in the wilderness. Furthermore, the very night after Macomber’s defeat, she goes to bed with Wilson, without even trying to dissimulate in front of her husband. The courage to kill and to face death is taken here as the main criteria for manhood: â€Å"Fear gone like an operation. Something else grew in its place. Main thing a man had. Made him into a man. Women knew it too. No bloody fear.†(Hemingway, 12) The marriage between Francis and Margot had been nothing more than a profitable business affair, him having the money and she the beauty. As it is hinted, these interests are the only things that kept them together still. Both of them seem to be sure these ties are strong enough to secure against a break-up. However, after having found out about his wife’s betrayal, Macomber’s instinctive nature seems to be awakened: he discovers the exhilaration that the hunt and the killings produce in him, and his fear is completely gone. Still, Margot is not pleased by her husband’s success, as one would expect. She rather feels threatened, and tries to hide it by resuming her contemptuous attitude towards him: â€Å"’Youve gotten awfully brave, awfully suddenly,’ his wife said contemptuously, but her contempt was not secure. She was very afraid of something.†(Hemingway, 11) Thus, Margot ‘rewards’ the braveness of her husband by killing him while he was fighting the bull, apparently trying to aim at the beast. However, it is obvious that she kills him intentionally, first of all, because of her strange behavior before the murder, and also because of the logic of events. As Hemingway hints, ‘she was afraid of something’ and it can plainly be seen that that something was the fact that Macomber might leave her for her betrayal, now that he found his self-assurance and his manliness again. This is exactly what Wilson alludes at after the ‘accident’: â€Å"’That was a pretty thing to do,’ he said in a toneless voice. ‘He would have left you too.’†(Hemingway, 14) She thus kills her husband to ward off the danger of having him leave her. This is proven by her strong emotions during the bull hunt, in which Macomber finally shows his braveness: her face is white with fear and probably contrasting feelings. At first she seems to congratulate again the winner, this time her husband: â€Å"’In the car Macombers wife sat very white-faced. ‘You were marvelous, darling,’ she said to Macomber. ‘What a ride.’†(Hemingway, 13) Nonetheless, her admiration soon turns into the fear that her husband will desert her: â€Å"Her face was white and she looked ill.† Again, the fact that Margot kills her husband on purpose coheres with the rest of her instinctive behavior: although the main reason of the killing seems to be his fortune or her social stand which she might lose, it may be that her murder is again instinctive, in the sense that she is afraid of losing the now desirable man, because of his courage. She prefers shooting him, again cohering with the hunt. Her ‘hysterical’ crying over the dead body of her husband do not manage to convince us of her innocence or her pain at the loss: she rather mourns him either because she needs to act in front of the other hunters, or because she has to give up the hero she had been looking for. The way in which she changes her mind after Macomber’s success, and she says that their hunting is by no means a heroic act, clearly demonstrates that she feels trapped, again manifesting her instinctual nature. At the end of the story, she herself is defeated by Wilson, who plainly lets her see that he knows the truth, and seems to enjoy the feeling of being able to submit her to his will, and have her beg: Thats better, ‘Wilson said. ‘Please is much better. Now Ill stop.’(Hemingway, 14) The meanings of Hemingway’s story are thus very complex, as he analyzes the instinctual relationships between men and women, and other instincts, such as that of killing and hunting or of possessing and dominating. Paradigm in Nursing Essay Example for Free

Paradigm in Nursing Essay Nursing as any science is a tentative, testable and falsifiable discipline. It undergoes: empirical observation, hypothesis development, experiment, results/finding and finally conclusion. Basing on the finding, one can accept or reject the hypothesis. Theory has been seen as the model of the ethics of conducting a set up and while forth is in position to predict future occurrences or observations of the same kind and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise verified through observation. Each theory has set principles on how to verify it known as paradigm. Discussion Paradigms are a set of postulations; practices shared by a particular body, say a community of researchers and stems from a single theme. The paradigm seeks to regulate inquiry into the discipline that is concerned. It can therefore be viewed as the norm which the scientists or researchers can use as platform which they can agree of disagree depending on their findings. The various paradigms have one thing in common. They are characterized by ontological, epistemological and methodological differences in their approaches to conducting research (Demarest, et al 1993). This in return contributes to paradigm shift. Paradigm is seen to supersede mere interpretation of the tabulated finding or basic understanding in general. Superstition of paradigm consequently gives varied contribution in the area of disciplinary knowledge construction. Depending on the researchers sentiments/he may consider these differences so vast that one paradigm is inequivalent to another. Alternatively, these differences may be ignored or combined so as to conduct the research needed. To accomplish the task of developing nursing knowledge for use in practice, there is a need for a critical, integrated understanding of the paradigms used for nursing inquiry. This is arising due to the fact that each paradigm has a shift (Demarest, et al 1993). For instance, Child development defects will be viewed from various aspects and hence differing paradigm. A biologist my evaluate child development in perspective that children will naturally gain knowledge as they physically grow and become older, provided that they are healthy. Others may view that the child gains knowledge depending on its surrounding or what it interact with; while others view that a child is due for school after it starts interacting with environment and people as well. A nurse scholar can thus decide to combine the three theories or ignore all to achieve what s/he is researching on. Conclusion In conclusion the nurse researcher should weigh the pros and cons of a particular paradigm in his/her approach to assess of existing knowledge and thereby fill the informational gaps. This is because dominance of a particular paradigm is influenced by a number of factors. These may include: the source of finance for the research, government influence, biases from the journal and editors of the print, conferences and symposiums held, coverage by the media, educators who are responsible of spreading the paradigm to their students as well as the professional bodies which may favor a particular paradigm. However, paradigm should be natural and operational in all times.

Coca Cola uses SWOT analysis to access their performance

Coca Cola uses SWOT analysis to access their performance Strengths Coca Cola is an enormously familiar company. Recognition is one of its bigger strengths that are almost unparalleled. Coca Cola is known very well across the world. Its branding is clear and renowned. The logo of Coca Cola is one of the most famous things in the world. Some people buy coke, not only because of its taste but because it is widely accepted and they feel like they are part of something so big and unifying. Overwhelming is the best word to describe Coca Colas popularity. It is scary to think that its popularity has been constantly growing over the years and the possibility that there is still room to grow. If you speak the words Coca Cola, it would definitely be recognized all around the world. Money is another thing that is strength of the company. Coca Cola deals with massive amounts of money all year. Like all businesses, they have had their ups and downs financially, but they have done well in this compartment and will continue to do well and improve. The money they a re earning is substantially better than most beverage companies, and with that money, they put back into their own company so that they can improve. Another strength that is very important to Coca Cola is customer loyalty. The 80/20 rule comes into effect in this situation. Eighty percent of their profit comes from 20% of their loyal customers. Many people/families are extremely loyal to Coca Cola. It would not be rare to constantly find bottles and cases of a product such as coke in a house. It seems that some people would drink coke religiously like some people would drink water and milk. This is an improbable feat. Weaknesses Coca Cola is a very successful company, with limited weaknesses. However they do have a variety of weaknesses that need to be addressed if they want to rise to the next level. Word of mouth is probably a strength and weakness of every company. While many people have good things to say, there are many individuals who are against Coca Cola as a company, and the products in which they produce. While people will have their opinions, you have to try to sway their negative views. If bad comments and views are put out to people who have yet to try Coca Cola products, then that could produce a lost customer which shows why word of mouth is a weakness. Another aspect that could be viewed as a weakness is the lack of popularity of many of Coca Colas drinks. Many drinks that they produce are extremely popular such as Coke and Sprite but this company has approximately 400 different drink types. Most are unknown and rarely seen for available purchase. These drinks do not probably taste bad, but a re rather a result of low profile or nonexistent advertising. This is a weakness that needs to be looked at when analyzing their company. Another weakness that has been greatly publicized is the health issues that surround some of their products. It is known that a popular product like coke is not very beneficial to your body and your health. With todays constant shift to health products, some products could possibly loose customers. Opportunities Coca Cola has a few opportunities in its business. It has many successful brands that it should continue to exploit and pursue. Coca Cola also has the opportunity to advertise its less popular products. With a large income it has the available money to put some of these other beverages on the market. This could be very beneficial to the company if they could start selling these other products to the same extent that they do with their main products. Another opportunity that we have seen being put to use before is the ability for Coca Cola to buy out their competition. This opportunity rarely presents itself in the world of business. However, with Coca Colas power and success, such a task is not impossible. Coca Cola has bought out a countless number of drink brands. An easy way to turn their profit into your profit is too buy out their company. Brand recognition is the significant factor affecting Cokes competitive position. Coca Cola is known well throughout 90% of the world populat ion today. Now Coca Cola wants to get there brand name known even better and possibly get closer and closer to 100%. It is an opportunity that most companies will ever dream of, and would be a supreme accomplishment. Threats Despite the fact that Coca Cola dominates its market, it still has to deal with many threats. Even though Coca Cola and Pepsi control nearly 40% of the entire beverage market, the changing health-consciousness attitude of the market could have a serious effect on Coca Cola. This definitely needs to be viewed as a dominant threat. In todays world, people are constantly trying to change their eating and drinking habits. This could directly affect the sale of Coca Colas products. Another possible issue is the legal side of things. There are always issues with a company of such supreme wealth and popularity. Somebody is always trying to find fault with the best and take them down. Coca Cola has to be careful with lawsuits. Other threats are of course the competition. Coca Colas main competition being Pepsi, sells a very similar drink. Coca Cola needs to be careful that Pepsi does not grow to be a more successful drink. Other product such as juices, coffee, and milk are threats.

It looks like this lyric is written by a shaking pen that is not under Burn’s command but under a magic power of an emotional vibration, which sources automatically from an exquisite sense of spirituality. Without such vibration, Burns could not choose any word to create his immortal lyric. The secret s of this fascinating lyric can be detected in the light of a literary analysis of four stanzas, and the literary interpretation of every gleaning word. The often-used first line makes the reader more familiar with poem. The speaker's love is expressed through two similes; his love is compared to â€Å"a red, red rose† and â€Å"the melody† (1, 3). The speaker echoes his sentiments by reinforcing two above similes with the phrases â€Å"That’s newly† and â€Å"That’s sweetly† (2, 4). Obviously, the color "red" is a symbol of passionate love and used in the form of alliteration such â€Å"a red, red rose† it shows how strong is the speaker’s feeling (1). Its appeal over time and comparison with the loved woman gives the reader the possibility to discover the speaker’s pleasant ways on art... ...essly is distinguished that Burns brings to the reader a breathing red, red, rose that disperse its aroma in air of Scotland of that time. In addition, it is easy to see that Burns admires the folklore of his country, and classic writer and with an innate realism and so sweet melody becomes one the best representative of naturalism and romance. A detailed literary analyze shows how the word choose, rhythm and a figurative languages are used skillfully in closed form to create a masterpiece. These elements of literary analyses and Burns ideas make him belong to extraordinary school of romanticism. Sassouma Berete and Sogolon Kedjou in The Epic of Sundiata Essay

Mothers play a very influential role in a young mans life. Even though Sogolon Kedjou and Sassouma Bà ©rà ©tà © both had an impact on there son's life, their character traits were at different ends of the maternal spectrum. Despite minuscule similarities Sogolon Kedjou and Sassouma Bà ©rà ©tà © were depicted in direct contrast in the epic Sundiata. When comparing the two Sogolon Kedjou and Sassouma Berete both did what they thought would help to get their son's to become king. Sogolon knew everything that Sassouma was capable of doing to hurt her family, so she came up with the idea to leave the kingdom. Soglon said, "Lets us leave my son" (113). She thought this would be the best thing to do for all her children so she could keep them alive. "Despairing of ever injuring you, Sassouma will aim her blows at your brother or sister"(115). Although it was Sundiata's destiny to become king there was no set time placed on when this would occur. Therefore traveling to different kingdoms gave them time, and allowed for the fulfillment of not only Sundiata's destiny, but the destiny of his sibling too. Sassouma on the other hand wanted her son Dankaran to reign as the king of Mali after his father passed away. Sassouma knew her late husband would not pass the throne to her son, so she decided to banish Sogolon and her family to the backyard. Sassouma thought this would help her son's path to becoming the next king of Mali. She thought Sundiata was competition and a distraction to her son, so she wanted him dead. "I want to kill Sundiata. His destiny runs counter to my son's and he must be killed while there is still time" (115). Although Sogolon and Sassouma Berete were both wives and mothers, Sogolon was portrayed as a good mother... ... to mine" (111). From this quote, it clearly shows how much arrogance and vanity the queen really had. In contrast to this, and despite the intense humiliation that she went through, Sogolon humbly left Sassouma's home "with a lump in her throat."(111) She never talked back to Sassouma, and she would never let Sassouma see her cry. Since Sogolon and Sundiata let his fait play out, they ended up on top. Sundiata takes his rightful place and becomes the king of Mail which he was born to lead. In conclusion, despite minuscule similarities Sogolon Kendjou and Sassouma Berete were depicted in direct contrast in the epic Sundiata. It is obvious that, despite the fact that both queens wanted the best for their sons, their characters and methods were different. Since they were so different it influenced not only Sundiata and Dankaran but all of the king's children.

Oxalate ION Essay

The dissociation of protons from oxalic acid proceeds in a stepwise manner as for other polyprotic acids. Loss of a single proton results in the monovalent hydrogenoxalate anion HC2O4−. A salt with this anion is sometimes called an acid oxalate, monobasic oxalate, or hydrogen oxalate. The equilibrium constant (Ka) for loss of the first proton is 5.37Ãâ€"10−2 (pKa = 1.27). The loss of the second proton, which yields the oxalate ion has an equilibrium constant of 5.25Ãâ€"10−5 (pKa = 4.28). These values imply that, in solutions with neutral pH, there is no oxalic acid, and only trace amounts of hydrogen oxalate.[1] The literature is often unclear on the distinction between H2C2O4, HC2O4-, and C2O42-, and the collection of species is referred to oxalic acid. otany patnawomenscollege.in/journal Explore, 2010, Page No. 63–67 Vol. II No. 2 Analysis of oxalate of fresh and stored tomato juice Devshikha*, Nitya Priyadarshi*, Sukriti Rani Prasad** *B.Sc. –II year (2008-2011), Department of Botany, Patna Women’s College, Patna University **Lecturer (Gue Premium663 Words3 Pages Study of Oxalate Ion St. John’s Senior Secondary School and Junior College Mandaveli Chennai – 600028 A CHEMISTRY PROJECT â€Å"STUDY OF THE OXALATE ION CONTENT IN GUAVA FRUIT† Submitted in the partial Fulfilment of the requirement for AISSCE 2010-2011 By Abdud Dayan Adeeb Of Class XII C St. John’s Senior Premium1368 Words6 Pages Oxalate Oxalate From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The structure of the oxalate anion A ball-and stick model of oxalate Oxalate (IUPAC: ethanedioate) is the dianion with the formula C2O42−, also written (COO)22−. A personal opinion in favor of the trophy culture system of rewarding children regardless of performance Essay

Should nippers overhear an yield fairish for participating? This question has be do it unity of great debate in new years following the rise of prize last, a schema where children receive awards regardless of comeance and get applauded for entirely showing up. M each p atomic number 18nts argue that crowing children awards even if they do not perform well promotes entitlement and teaches them to not try. My thoughts on the take were a little mixed forwards I did any research on the subject. As individual who has participated in run forway and cross-country for years, I hurt been a witness to prize Culture in numerous of the races Ive competed in. When I was a beginner runner, I rargonly if perpetually placed in races, and was often lock up given a ribbon salutary for completing the course. Any matchless who has taken part in a large-scale public race comparable Race for the Cure or the Disneyland Marathon knows what I am talk of the town about, basically if yo u get across the quit line even if youre hours stinkpot the first place runner at that place will still be someone there putting a thread around your neck at the end. When I was younger and slower, getting that medal was passing exciting because I felt wish well even finishing 3 miles of runnel as an overweight 7th grader was a big accomplishment. And the girls who finished in the reach 20 of the races typically got other medal on top of the participation one, meat I still had something to strive towards, so lack of motivation was not a problem. And as Ive grown and modify in my running skills, the Trophy Culture that is extremely prevalent in the sport of running still does not nettle me. I could argue that getting up at 600 AM both morning over the summer and study my hardest, only to win a half(a) marathon then get the convey same medal as the adult female who finished last almost 2 hours after I am disheartening. However, I accept that the trophies we get for accomplishing things like this are essentially meaningless, and the true reward is the signature of triumph one gets when finishing something real challenging. This feeling relates to the existence of self-esteem, or ones overall military rank of their worth as a per word of honor. Doing a difficult task well like performing excellently in a soccer second or acing a test are ways we freighter amend our self-esteem and feel reform about ourselves. This plays into our sense of self-efficacy, our belief inability to perform and get through in tasks presented to us. somewhat parents theorise that pillage culture is artificially inflating their childrens self-esteem and self-efficacy, making children think they are performing better than they actually are and allowing for them to almost get stuck in a mediocre surgical exercise because they have no reason to believe their performance is less than ideal. On the other locating of the argument, there are parents who think th at if we award children for completing sports seasons or specific events, we are teaching them that it is worth keeping a commitment, that we value this (Heffernan, 2015).A recent invoice from Real Sports With Bryant Gumble on HBO explored this problem. In the house trailer for the show, he is seen interviewing a woman who says that big trophies to e veryone regardless of performance sets the bar comely low, and she also makes the argument that she wants kids to improve and be engaged in the process of improvement, and she thinks without incentive this will neer happen. This perspective on the topic is one that make headline news when NFL line backer James Harrison took to Instagram announcing he would be move back the trophies his sons, 6 and 8, received until they constitute a real trophy(Wallace, 2015). In an member analyzing the different sides of the debate, Kelly Wallace from CNN points out that many experts side with those saying, if you tell a kid theyre wonderful a nd they believe you, thats not about healthy self-esteem, thats about narcissism.Lisa Heffernan, a subscriber to NBC intelligence TODAY, disagrees with this mindset. According to her, participation trophies cue kids that they are part of something, and may dish build enthusiasm to return for another season. Another point she brings up is that at a time when parents recoil of escalating competition in youth sports, trophies motivate kids that we value their effort, regardless of ability or results. Her words echo those of a writer by the name of John Kass, whose article in the moolah Tribune includes a portion from his son who claims Whats wrong with a participation trophy for kids? It makes them laughing(prenominal). Theyre ingenuous 6 years old. Isnt it good to be a kid, and happy, playing the game? Theyre just kids. Kass then goes on to explain that this conversation with his son made him realize participation trophies arent as bad as some pot want us to believe, and get ting a participation trophy as a child didnt make his son any less competitive. After yarn articles with opinions from both sides of the argument, I have come to the conclusion that my initial view of the topic has not changed I still believe that Trophy Culture is not detrimental to the development of childrens self-esteem and commonwealth fighting to end a system that allows awards for participation are wasting their time. Children adopt encouragement and support from their parents, coaches, and others to succeed and stay motivated in everything from sports to academics. try to get rid of participation awards could very likely result in disheartened children. Like John Kasss son said in his discussion with his father, Whats wrong with a participation trophy for kids? It makes them happy. If giving participation trophies make kids happy and doesnt harm anyone else, then the light choice is to allow participation awards to spread over in our society.Works CitedHeffernan, Lisa . In the compend of food extracts normally 1D-GC secure with insecticides (Fig. 1b), delimit figurele (in this case chlorfenvinphos) coelute analyte and take intercellular substance is more torrential components. Results obtained for such compounds, skunk spectrum outline ( prefigure 1e) very much contains compounds derived from fragments of interference, lead-in to poor coordinated and library commodestack spectrometry (Fig. 1d). MS convergence algorithm may greatly correct the spirit of the knowledge of coeluting peak, but they be not invariably successful, when the number of coelutions is high. skeletal system 1a shows, full 2D-GC (GC?GC) to increase space and improve the chromatographic separation of the resolution, topicing in the separa tion of analytes of recreate (chlorfenvinphos) from coeluting compounds and ground substance components. Result, meliorate the flavor of the analyte ken (Fig. 1c), pickings into account the substantiation of a more self-assured synopsis of textile (Figure 1d). It is possible that some coelutions outlast these may often solve expeditiously overlap with the MS, lead story to better resultants, spot minify the number of components when the coeluting. In this system, linear (1D) chromatogram of a mazy and assailable part is subjected to the nonmoving shape coat with a second column separation of the othe r selectivity 1. Although this regularity increases the 1D chromatographic part of the plectron of chromatographic resolutions, this method with mechanisation challenging, and nevertheless a few precedent components can be adequately addressed. However, the many applications is good for the PCBs, pesticides and toxaphene abridgment, among other things, the stem with incompatible degrees of success 6-12. Overall, however, is the pick out number of separation exit be beneficial, if the entire type is subjected to a separation in two dimensions. This became possible a umbrella plane gas chromatography (GC?GC) in the introduction. convention for unconditional atom smasher Chromatography (GC?GC)2D-GC is a omnibus(prenominal) method of fundamental solution to meet the highest capacity. A regular social judicature of GC?GC set in Figure 2. The canonic structure of GC?GC utilise nigh is the same as the composition of 1D-GC. These include syringes, oven, columns and dete ctors. In a typical GC?GC system, using non-polar stationary course coat with a loggerheaded masking of a long column was installed as the main column. The exports through a spare port or modem is connected to the entrance of the second dimension column coat with stationary degree of other selectivity. Modulator connected not only to primary and tributary column its main bureau is restate trap of the outflowing fractions from the root dimension and yearly pellet of them to the form of narrow pulses disconnected into pass on chromatographic abbreviation. Because the operation of 2D-GC in the fast condition, the detector in the GC?GC filling is limited to those capable of fast data appealingness rate. For example, GC?GC detector can include flame ionisation detector (FID), electron capture detector (ECD), single atomic procession detector (AED), reciprocal ohm compounds ocular detector (SCD), nitrogen photodetector compounds (NCD) and time of escapism mass s pectrometer (TOF MS).Fig. 2 A block diagram of a GC?GC system.Modulator is the important part of the instrument, because it guarantees the separation is plenary and threesome-d 13. In 1991, the first writ of execution of the GC?GC, the field has witnessed a number of modulator endeavor 14. Initially, the use of thermal enrollment of the heat modulator was employ however, the modular cryogenic liquid (liquid carbon dioxide or nitrogen) is before long the main use. Modulator at low temperatures within the system, individually shape has its own distinct reinforcements and limitations, reservation it qualified for analytic thinking of the particularized type. For example, the epitome of water pollutants has been substantial an larboard 19, when the buildings, and an in-house applications modulator in the numeric digest of PAHs and PCBs has been draw 15. Then, the modulator of the incompatible types of analyte in the psycho abstract of organohalogenated been evalu ated 16.The carrying into action of GC?GC provides the quest expediency to draw the 1D separation method value separation chroma alter sensitivities and constructs or passing predetermined, stratography spectrum. In the environment analytic thinking, GC?GC has the probable to improve the toxic compound through the separation from the coeluting compendium and the matrix component, increases the detection limit such chemical product and provides the ideal for the management application the matte stratography spectrum which constructs. Finally, this peradventure causes to reduce to the smallest exemplification preparation procedure, and reduces compendium time. otherwise applications are as well possible. For example, recently, GC?GC the product calculate which divide into for the diesel oil hydrocarbon environment had used, was important bear upon many ecosystems 17 the oil leak.Application of GC?GC in environmental compend wet and sedimentation compendiumThe w ater is the most introductory literal to the life in planet. In order to account that the tap water base hit for human consumption, the rapid, precise and the precise method needs to analysis the water. The sediment is likewise important for river and the lake The analysis of water pollutant is long consume preparation, follows by GC-MS analyzes. In the initial period accomplished that GC?GC has the great latent return to analysis water and sediment. In its soonest applications in this region, GC?GC was explained by chance from the common matrix interference which is separating the BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene) and methyl alcohol tert butyl ether (MTBE), when and SPME 18. The separation authorization of GC?GC is amend MTBE and the benzene are the butt line solution in the second chromatograph analysis space. In another research, GC?GC-TOF has identified 377 kind of nitrogen-containing compound to the tail end condensates basic suckers MS analysis, in one hundred fifty-five is the pyridine derivative, 104 kinds kui lin or different kui lin derivative and 56 kind of pyrazine derivative 45.ConclusionsGC?GC has achieved the condition rapidly for to the volatilizable native compound analysis most powerful tool. It appoints oneself effect to be qualified all in all for in the complex sample surveillance analysis technology. In the environment analyze area, this includes PCBs by the analysis many example evidence to the common environment pollutant, PCDDs, PCDFs, PAHs and the pesticide in the complex environment matrix. Moreover, GC?GC has the potential to simplify the sample preparation procedure (even all to rule in them), when simultaneously causes when the shorter overall analysis time high resolution stratography spectrum.Regarding wide a new analysis method which adopts, not only it is sure as shooting accredited and renewable, but it should besides exhibit the significant favour to kick the bucket the method which accepts. The example report the covering GC?GC method advantage in this brushup in the conventional 1DGC separation. In GC?GC historical first years period, the instrumentation development is the main central point However, from GC?GC systems commercialization, the application touchstone which inform greatly increases in the environment analysis and other scientific fields. Therefore, we may tolerate that the convert mechanization GC?GC is unified on-line(a) sample which the symmetry uses to prepare gradually the equipment in the regular environmental monitoring .References1.
